Landscape Architecture: Architecture of Life
Landscape architecture focuses on the use of gardens, yards,
grounds, parks, and green outdoor spaces for both decoration and
enhancement of architecture. It’s also important in conservation;
well-landscaped areas do not typically erode, and can be used as
watershed protection or flood protection for lower-lying areas.
A landscape architect focuses first on the natural terrain – hillsides,
valleys, creeks, and other natural features by necessity form a vital
part of the design. They enhance and alter existing landforms. Trees,
bushes, shrubs, hedges, flowers, grass, decorative plants, water, and
rocks are used to either alter or create a pleasant natural setting;
small outdoor structures like terraces and gazebos are also used to
enhance the effect.
Landscape design can be either of classical, symmetrical effect, like
many of the formal English gardens of old manor homes; or they can be
of natural, romantic design, which is more common for parks used by
people. Aesthetic aspects need to consider form, plants, colors,
scents, and climate. If you’re landscaping, you need to also consider
the changing of the seasons, the amount of maintenance required, and
plant cycles of growth and death.
Oriental influences have also brought in the Japanese tea garden,
designed originally to surround teahouses and induce the correct mood
in participants in the tea ceremony. Japanese tea gardens tend to be on
a small scale, with miniature trees, rocks, water, and bridges as vital
elements. With Japanese gardens, the architect must pay even more
attention to plants and their requirements.
But whatever landscape design you choose, be sure to go with a concept
that will give your landscaping and/or garden the feeling you desire.
Most people want to experience some sort of calm when enjoying a
garden, as well as water elements, color and fragrance. Careful
planning will ensure that you create the garden of your dreams.
