Architectural Design: Living Space and Beauty
Architecture has been around since man moved out of caves.
Probably the first architecture was in creating earthworks and tombs
for the dead; since then, man has moved onward and upward, creating
skyscrapers that are closing in on a mile high, and conceiving grand
designs that take architecture off the Earth and into space.
Architecture defines the appearance and function of a permanent
structure. Some of the first architectural masterpieces were the
pyramids of Egypt and of Central America, or the standing stones that
dot the European landscape; the functions of these early structures
were primarily religious. And this is something repeated throughout the
history of architecture; just like art, architecture has long been used
to express the glory of God. Only in modern times has architecture been
turned more to the glory of Man than of God; today’s skyscrapers are
primarily a celebration of the terrestrial power of humans.
In addition to its religious and metaphysical aspects, architecture
focuses on human comfort. A house that contains only bathrooms is
useless, as is a house that contains all its rooms in one large space.
Architecture is used to define living space and how it flows together.
Architecture is also important for defining how and where utilities
like air flow and plumbing enter a building.
Architecture is the ultimate expression of man’s mastery over his
environment. With architecture, we can keep ourselves snug in man-made
caves; but we can also shape and define the environment outside us.
Large buildings have their own weather; the Sears Tower has to be taken
into consideration by air traffic not just because it’s a large object,
but also because air flows differently in the area around it. And
cities are typically a few degrees warmer at any given time than the
countryside around them. With architecture, we protect ourselves
against the environment, and we also change it.
